The Trachycarpus originally comes from China, where they have harsh winters and it can be very cold. This fan palm is known for its high cold resistance. Mature palms can recover from minus 18 degrees Celsius. Due to the mild winters in the West, these palms are very popular.

The Trachycarpus needs a sunny position and well-drained soil. He is a real water lover. Especially in the summer, this palm needs a lot of water, preferably daily. A Fortunei in the open ground must receive enough water, especially during the first two years, so that the palm can quickly produce new roots. Here too, the soil may be thoroughly wetted every time after drying. Especially in summer it is important that the palm gets enough water. After 2 years, the palm has produced enough roots to take care of itself and can in principle extract water from the ground itself. It is advisable to provide extra water during warm, dry periods.

In winter, it is advisable to put a fleece cloth over the palm in case of prolonged cold of minus 10 degrees Celsius. This protects the palm against possible snow and the cold.
